Creating New Secondary Sections

This section provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about creating new secondary sections in the Sched Dev area of the CCLP. If you don't find the answer to your CCLP question, try putting a keyword or phrase into the Search CCLP field (in the upper right corner) and press Return, or you can submit an idea for a FAQ.



Q: How to Create a New Secondary Section
A: To create a new secondary section:

  1. On your Sched Dev record, click on the Scheduling tabbed area.
  2. If the term of your record requires a one off, click Start One-off Changes. Otherwise go to step 3. (For information about one-offs see New/Delete One-offs and Modification One-offs.
  3. Click on the New Secondary Section button.
  4. A new secondary section will be created with the next section letter in sequence.
  5. Indicate the section activity type by clicking on the field after the section letter. A dropdown list of activity types will appear. Select one that applies to your course (DIS, LBS, FLS, or STS).
  6. Add a Projected Enrollment value. Projected enrollment must be greater than 0.
  7. Add an AIS Init Enrollment value. AIS Init Enrollment must be 0 or greater.
  8. To add meeting day and time information, add it in the Day, Start, and End fields.
  9. To indicate a room preference that is a department-owned room, click on the field below Dept (direclty to the right of the End Time field). You will be presented with a list of department owned spaces. Select one from the list.
  10. To indicate a room preference that is NOT a department-owned room but is a general assignment room, click on the field below GA.
  11. To indicate desired room features, click on the arrow under Set Features. A popup will appear. Click on the checkbox for the desired room features. Then click Save Selection and Close.

Q: How to Add Instructors to a Secondary Section
A: To add one or more instructors to a secondary section:

  1. On your Sched Dev record, click on the Scheduling tabbed area.
  2. If the term of your record requires a one off, click Start One-off Changes. Otherwise go to step 3. (For information about one-offs see New/Delete One-offs and Modification One-offs.
  3. Go to the secondary section letter that you want to add instructor(s) to and click the blue arrow next to the section letter. A popup will open. Note: instructors can only be added via the popup.
  4. Click on the CruzID field and select an instructor from the list.
  5. Select an Instructor Type from the Instr Type field (either PI, TA, or CA). PI stands for primary instructor, TA stands for teaching assistant, and CA stands for course assistant.
  6. If you have additional instructors to add repeat steps 4 and 5, otherwise skip to step 7.
  7. Close the popup.

Q: The Instructor I Want to Add to A Secondary Section is not Listed

A: Instructors that are have a status of Hired or Pending and that are associated with the department and subject you are logged into the CCLP with are listed in the instructors dropdown list. If the instructor you are trying to add is not in the list, please contact your Divisional CCLP Subject Matter Expert or contact Corinne O'Connell at corinne@ucsc.edu.

Q: How to Set the Activity Type for a Secondary Section

A: The default value for a secondary section activity type is UNK (for Unknown). If you have a secondary section, you will need to select an activity type from the Act Type dropdown list. The values to choose from are:

  • DIS (Discussion)
  • LBS (Secondary Lab)
  • STS (Secondary Studio)
  • FLS (Secondary Field)

The secondary section activity type should match the optional component on the matching AIS Cat record (if there is one).

Q: How to Add Section Letters Beyond Z (e.g. AA, BB, etc.)

A: The CCLP is not designed to have more than 26 secondary sections per Sched Dev record (the highest section letter you can create in the CCLP is section Z). If you need to add sections beyond section letter Z (e.g. AA, BB, etc.) please contact the Classroom Scheduling Team. To identify TAs that will be teaching the secondary sections beyond section letter Z, please contact the Classroom Scheduling Team as well.
